  17. <p>    On the night two years ago when FRED LEBOW first learned
  18. he had brain cancer, he vowed he would live to run the 26.2
  19. torturous miles of the New York City Marathon. Though he's the
  20. organizer of the marathon, Lebow, 59, had never competed in the
  21. city-spanning race. His cancer now in remission, Lebow plans to
  22. fulfill his promise in November. "What I'm doing tells people
  23. in my condition that they shouldn't give up. They should
  24. persevere."
